6 • SPRING/SUMMER 2014 Are you a bartender who consistently strives to perfect your trade, and one who produces the odd tipple every now and then? If the answer is an emphatic "Yes," consider yourself an Artisan and a Craftsperson. We're seeing many new grain-based spirits, beautiful distilled agavacea, sugarcane, and grape distillates doubling—even tripling—in the market every year. The artisanal boon we are experiencing is seeing a return to "neat" cocktails rooted in commitment to the distiller's craft. Simultaneously we're seeing the addition of modifiers that provide a clear departure from the original brew. The fact remains: there's much to taste, but so little time! And the trends are unmistakable. I've seen patrons enjoying a finger or two of several different brands before calling it a night—a practice rather unheard of just a few years back. I've also witnessed a slew of deli- cious cocktails going across the bar, expertly crafted with the intent to touch upon all five traditional senses as well as the "sixth" sense, umami. In our second year of action, we are commit- ted to sharing, discovering and celebrating all the Artisanal brands that will allow you to hit those senses. Thank you for allowing us to continue building a great network with you and our many Artisans from around the globe, one taste at a time. I hope you find inspiration in the pages ahead, and with that said, I have just one pointed question for you: Where are you headed with your craft programs for 2014? Be sure to let me know. Ray Ewers All the Best, Key Account Specialist, Southern California RayEwers@southernwine.com Dear bartenders,
