SPRING/SUMMER 2014 • 5 I have been tending bar for over 25 years and during this time, as in so much of our indus- try, there has been a lot of change and growth in my profession. Change comes in waves and at different times—during my career I saw my first wave of change in the mid- to late-1990s as I was introduced to the concept of using fresh ingredients. Soon after, I became acquainted with the United States Bartenders' Guild (USBG), where I met many like-minded bartenders, who like me, had a knack for creativity and a passion for the craft of mixology. In recent years, these creative trends coupled with a focus on fresh ingredients have swept into all corners of our industry and it's no surprise that in cities across the U.S., so many bars and restaurants have em- braced the very farm-to-glass craft movement that we are experiencing today. As my career shifted from Bar Manager at Enrico's Sidewalk Café in San Francisco, and my expertise expanded into new territory as the Director of Mixology for Southern Wine & Spirits, so too have I witnessed the expansion of the USBG. As a founding member of the Northern California Chapter, which was the third chapter to be established, back in 2003, I am proud to report that at the present there are 41 chapters across the country, and I feel lucky to preside over our 4,000 members as the Guild's National President—a responsibility that I take seriously. Our industry has changed, but changed for the best. Bartenders from coast to coast are educated in spirits and the details of each brand's production process. The importance of providing great service to guests is prevalent among the community, and so is the dedication to using quality ingredients, such as the great craft products offered here in the Artisanal Group Catalog. Take a look deep into this catalog, and enjoy the trek these great spirits and liquors take you on. to our bartending community, David Nepove Director of Mixology, Northern California DavidNepove@southernwine.com Cheers,
