2021 SCL AWARDS I 3 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE At that time, who could have predicted the strange and unprecedented situation our industry would face in the following year. At our best, we music creators reflect society—both the good and the bad. Our work accompanies the gamut of the human experience. And we convey it through the screen and on the stage—that is, until the past year, when those outlets were taken away. Concerts were halted. Productions shut down. Suddenly we found our voices muted. But we are a resilient group and music can, and always will, endure. So we all found new ways to share our gifts with the world—live streaming, remote studio recording, and, much like tonight, virtual events. Obviously, these new ways of living and working haven't been easy for any of us. But in a strange way, being apart may very well have brought our creative community closer. I have been so proud watching my friends and colleagues triumph in spite of adversity during this pandemic. On a daily basis, I hear stories of how fellow SCL members have aided and supported one another as they've adjusted to our "new normal." In the face of obstacles, challenges and conditions unlike any of us had experienced, music creators were able to produce some truly amazing work in 2020—oftentimes stretching far beyond their comfort zone, not because they chose to, but because they had to. Tonight is not just a celebration of nominees and winners—it is recognition for everyone who was able to create new work in these difficult times. All of you should be commended for your strength through adversity. Now, we look to 2021 with guarded optimism that things may return to some form of normal. Undoubtedly, there will be aspects of our industry that have permanently changed. But what hasn't changed— what will never change—is the determination, perseverance and imagination of those who choose to pursue a life creating art. Thank you all for your continued dedication to music. Here's to better days ahead. A little over a year ago, I welcomed all of you to our first SCL Awards—a noteworthy moment in our organization's long and distinguished history. Tonight is not just a celebration of nominees and winners— it is recognition for everyone who was able to create new work in these diffi cult times. All of you should be commended for your strength through adversity. " "
