26 I SCL AWARDS 2021 SONIA SANCHEZ – "TULSA, 1921: CATCH THE FIRE" LOVECRAFT COUNTRY Sonia Sanchez is a poet, mother, professor, activist, and the author of over 16 books. In addition to being a contributing editor to The Black Scholar and The Journal of African Studies, she has edited an anthology, We Be Word Sorcerers: 25 Stories by Black Americans. BMA: The Sonia Sanchez Literary Review is the first African American journal that discusses the work of Sonia Sanchez and the Black Arts Movement. A recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts, Sanchez has received numerous awards that recognize her commitment to the arts and community service, including the 1999 Langston Hughes Poetry Award, the 2004 Harper Lee Award, and the National Visionary Leadership Award. She was the first Presidential Fellow at Temple University, and she held the Laura Carnell Chair in English at Temple University. Sonia Sanchez has lectured at over 500 universities and colleges in the United States and has traveled extensively, reading her poetry all over the world. RAPHAEL SAADIQ – "TULSA, 1921: CATCH THE FIRE" LOVECRAFT COUNTRY Raphael Saadiq is a Grammy-winning musician, songwriter, and go-to collaborator/producer for some of the biggest names in R&B. Solange Knowles, John Legend, Mary J. Blige, D'Angelo, Ne-Yo, and Miguel are among the many artists who turn to Saadiq for his deep musicality, contemporary creative vision, and encyclopedic knowledge of timeless pop music. Saadiq honed his craft as a producer by working with Snoop Dogg, Little Dragon, Erykah Badu, and Stevie Wonder. He has played bass or guitar for superstars like Justin Timberlake, Elton John, Mick Jagger, and Lady Gaga, and his compositions have been covered, sampled, or referenced by everyone from Ed Sheeran to Drake. In 2012, Saadiq was listed as one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People, and in 2017, he received an Oscar nomination in the Best Original Song category for co-writing "Mighty River" with Mary J. Blige for Mudbound. Saadiq is the composer-in-residence for the HBO show Insecure. His latest solo album, Jimmy Lee, was released in August 2019. LAURA KARPMAN – "TULSA, 1921: CATCH THE FIRE" LOVECRAFT COUNTRY Laura Karpman is an award-winning composer who brings a uniquely vivid and conceptual voice to her body of work, which spans film, television, concert halls, theater, and video games. Karpman has worked with some of today's most creative filmmakers, including Steven Spielberg, Alex Gibney, Kasi Lemmons, Rory Kennedy, Sam Pollard, Kathy Bates, and Sophia Coppola. The four-time Emmy winner's film and television credits include the HBO series Lovecraft Country, 2020 Oscar-nominated Walk Run Cha-Cha, the Discovery docuseries Why We Hate, and Miss Virginia. Karpman has received a Critics' Choice Award for her song "Jump," co-written by Raphael Saadiq and Taura Stinson and sung by Cynthia Erivo. Karpman is a fierce champion for women in music. In 2014, Karpman founded the Alliance for Women Film Composers; in 2015, she became the first American woman composer inducted into the Music Branch of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, and in 2016, she was elected the first female governor of the Music Branch.
