30 I SCL AWARDS 2021 JAMES NEWTON HOWARD – NEWS OF THE WORLD James Newton Howard is one of the film industry's most versatile and honored composers, with a career spanning over 30 years and encompassing more than 140 film and television projects. In addition to his eight Oscar nominations for films, including Michael Clayton, The Prince of Tides, and Defiance, he is an Emmy and Grammy winner. Howard has also been honored with ASCAP's prestigious Henry Mancini Award and the BMI Icon Award. As a record producer, arranger, and songwriter, he has collaborated with some of pop's biggest names, including Elton John, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Barbra Streisand, Earth, Wind & Fire, Bob Seger, Rod Stewart, Toto, Glenn Frey, Diana Ross, Carly Simon, Olivia Newton-John, Randy Newman, Rickie Lee Jones, and Chaka Khan. James was honored as an SCL Ambassador at the annual Los Angeles Holiday Party on December 14, 2011. LUDWIG GÖRANSSON – TENET In a career spanning only 12 years, Ludwig Göransson has amassed an impressive résumé in both the recording and motion picture industries, earning an Academy Award, an Emmy Award, multiple Grammy Awards, and countless other nominations. After assisting Theodore Shapiro, Göransson got his first break scoring the NBC television series Community. This led to a collaboration with Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, on several studio albums, including Because the Internet and Awaken, My Love! While pursuing his master's degree in film scoring at USC, Göransson met his other longtime collaborator, director Ryan Coogler. Göransson has since scored all of Coogler's features: Fruitvale Station, Creed, and Black Panther. Most recently, Göransson completed the score for Season 2 of The Mandalorian, Lucasfilm's first Star Wars live-action series, helmed by director Jon Favreau, streaming exclusively on Disney+. Göransson also composed the music for Christopher Nolan's Tenet, and he co-wrote and co-produced the songs for DreamWorks' Trolls World Tour with Justin Timberlake. TERENCE BLANCHARD – DA 5 BLOODS Trumpeter/composer, Oscar nominee, six-time Grammy winner, and 2018 USA Fellow Terence Blanchard has been a consistent artistic force for making powerful musical statements concern- ing painful American tragedies—past and present. Composing the scores for Spike Lee films ranging from the documentary When the Levees Broke to the epic Malcolm X and the latest Lee film, Da 5 Bloods, Blanchard has interwoven melodies that have created strong backdrops to hu- man stories. Some of Blanchard's other film credits include BlacKkKlansman, Jungle Fever, Inside Man, Eve's Bayou, Harriet, Red Tails, and Barbershop, and the television series Perry Mason. Blanchard recently composed his second opera, Fire Shut Up in My Bones, commissioned and premiered by Opera Theatre of Saint Louis in 2019. Based on writer Charles Blow's memoir, with a libretto by Kasi Lemmons, it will be the first opera composed by an African American to premiere at the Metropolitan Opera. Terence was honored as an SCL Ambassador at the annual New York Holiday Party on December 11, 2018. NOMINEES FOR ORIGINAL SCORE
