16 I SCL AWARDS 2021 BLAKE NEELY – THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT Blake Neely is an award-winning American composer whose work spans film, television, and the concert world. He has scored more than 30 television series and 15 films. His most recent projects include a commission from the Washington Ballet, the Tom Hanks film Greyhound, director Ryan White's Assassins, and the HBO Max Original Series The Flight Attendant. After decades of work with producer Greg Berlanti, he continues to score the CW's All American, Arrow, The Flash, Riverdale, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow, as well as the Netflix fan favorite You. Neely's documentary work covers a wide range of subjects, from CNN's The Decades series to Visible: Out on Television, Ask Dr. Ruth, The Keepers, Serena, and The Case Against 8. A recipient of three Emmy nominations, he is also the recipient of 16 BMI Film & TV Awards. Neely has lectured about film music at several prestigious institutions, including the Sundance Institute, USC, UCLA, and Columbia College, among others. CARLOS RAFAEL RIVERA – THE QUEEN'S GAMBIT Carlos Rafael Rivera is an Emmy Award-winning composer whose career has spanned several genres of the music industry. He mentored with the incomparable Randy Newman while studying at USC's Thornton School of Music. His work for film and TV includes scores for Netflix's Godless and Universal Pictures' A Walk Among the Tombstones, and he is currently scoring the Netflix miniseries The Queen's Gambit. As a guitarist, he has performed onstage as the opening act for The Who at the Hollywood Bowl; recorded studio sessions for Island/Def Jam, and Universal Records; as well as had songs featured on ABC's Scrubs, MTV, and VH-1. His work for the performing arts has been featured by some of the most prominent ensembles and soloists, including Arturo Sandoval, Colin Currie, Chanticleer, Cavatina Duo, and the Chicago Sinfonietta. As an educator, Rivera is Assistant Professor and Director of the Media Writing and Production Program at the acclaimed Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. LAURA KARPMAN – LOVECRAFT COUNTRY Laura Karpman is an award-winning composer who brings a uniquely vivid and conceptual voice to her body of work, which spans film, television, concert halls, theater, and video games. Karpman has worked with some of today's most creative filmmakers, including Steven Spielberg, Alex Gibney, Kasi Lemmons, Rory Kennedy, Sam Pollard, Kathy Bates, and Sophia Coppola. The four-time Emmy winner's film and television credits include the HBO series Lovecraft Country, 2020 Oscar-nominated Walk Run Cha-Cha, the Discovery docuseries Why We Hate, and Miss Virginia. Karpman has received a Critics' Choice Award for her song "Jump," co-written by Raphael Saadiq and Taura Stinson and sung by Cynthia Erivo. Karpman is a fierce champion for women in music. In 2014, Karpman founded the Alliance for Women Film Composers; in 2015, she became the first American woman composer inducted into the Music Branch of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, and in 2016, she was elected the first female governor of the Music Branch.
