96 { THE SOMM JOURNAL } APRIL/MAY 2017 { speed tasting report } CHÂTEAU FONFROIDE 2015 SINGLE ESTATE WHITE, Bordeaux Chateau Fonfroide's 2015 Single Estate White Bordeaux consists mostly of Sauvignon Blanc. The value-priced Bordeaux is produced by Crus et Domaines de France. This story of Cervaro, offering one of the highest pedigrees of the day, begins quite appropriately in a castle. In the 1940s, the Antinori family, one of Italy's most prominent winemaking families, purchased Castello della Sala. Years later, under the Castello della Sala label, they aspired to make a white wine different from all of the lighter wines coming out of Italy at the time. Says Alessia Botturi, Luxury Specialist, Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, "They wanted to make something more substantial. The first vintage was in 1985. Cervaro was the first wine in Italy to be aged in oak, and they're still using French barriques today. This wine was really a revolution when it first came out. It's one of the most awarded wines in Italy. The Grechetto adds that bit of daisy and green grass and, of course, regionality; also the extra acidity you may be getting is from the Grechetto." Tasting Notes Rich, creamy and decadent. Butter, vanilla, caramel and baking spice. The perfect wine for lobster. —Jesus Evangelista Creamy lemon, baking spices, and a nutty toasted sesame, and a nice salinity. Shows a nice elegance. —Sharon Coombs CERVARO DELLA SALA 2014, Umbria IGT, Italy Alessia Botturi, Luxury Specialist, Ste. Michelle Wine Estates.
