28 { THE SOMM JOURNAL } APRIL/MAY 2017 { barrel tastings } MAISON LOUIS JADOT was founded as a négociant house in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot, a Belgian wine merchant. During the 20th century, the Jadot family continued to grow their company, acquiring more and more premium vineyards. Today the com - pany owns more than 500 planted acres, including parts of such renowned plots as Clos Vougeot, Corton Charlemagne and Chambertin Clos de Bèze. Jadot produces hundreds of individually labeled Burgundies. Along the way, they also acquired Château des Jacques, a high-end producer of Beaujolais. In 1985, in order to assure the company's continuity, Jadot was sold to the American Kopf family, owners of Kobrand, Jadot's importer. Thus Burgundy's most important négociant became a wholly American-owned company. Frédéric Barnier, who was trained by Jadot's longtime, legendary cellarmaster Jacques Lardière, introduced a selection of barrel samples from the 2015 vintage. Appropriately, the tasting was held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The 2015 vintage has rightly been hailed as a stellar one in Burgundy, especially for the reds of the Côte d'Or. As my notes show, the Jadot wines are, at their best, magnificent expressions of this great vin - tage that will reward patience once bottled. My bracketed scores here are preliminary evaluations that will be reconsidered when I sample the finished wines. WHITES Domaine J. A.
