CellAR FOCUS SweetIt Is How S auternes may be the world’s most under-appreciated wine. The main reason for this is that dessert wines, in general, are currently out of favor (sales of sherry, port, madeira and late harvest Rieslings are slumping), and Sauternes, the silky sweet botrytis wine from Bordeaux, is no exception. This is really a pity because, if anything, Sauternes is currently going through a golden age. These exquisite sweet wines have never been cleaner, better made or more delicious. Furthermore, the wines of the most recent vintage to become available are among the best Sauternes ever made. Even though 2007 is essentially a washout for traditional Bordeaux wines, it produced stunningly beautiful Sauternes. A recent TASTING PANEL focus on multiple vintages of Sauternes high- lighted the excellence of these lovely wines.
