OUR PANEL TASTeS TequilaSpeed Dating OUR AGAVE EXPERTS KISS ANd Tell, TASTING BRAND AFTER BRAND AT TOMMY’S IN SAN FRANCISCO photos by Ryan lely PaQui: The Aztecan Artisan It doesn’t get much more authentic than a tequila named PaQui, meaning “to be happy” in the ancient native Aztec tongue of the Jalisco highlands. PaQui is handcrafted in small batches in a selective distillation process that uses only the most aromatic and flavorful portions, creating a pure tequila with exceptional drinkability, and each bottle captures the high-end tequila experi- ence while also celebrating the adventure and soul of this native spirit. Our Panel Votes: The lively tangy and floral (roses and violets!) PaQui Silvera (SRP $37) is as sippable as it is mixable. The liquid is clear and pure, with spirited inflections of white pepper.; imported by Tequila Holdings Our panel of tequila tasters included THE TASTING PANEL’S Editor-in-Chief Anthony Dias Blue, Wilfred Wong of BevMo!, Julio Bermejo (Tequila Ambassador to the U.S. and Beverage Manager at Tommy’s San Francisco), TPM Publisher Meridith May and spirits journalist Richard Carleton Hacker. I n the world of speed dating, there’s plenty to be nervous about, but when THE TASTING PANEL brought together our version of speed dating, tequila-style, at Tommy’s, San Francisco’s celebrated tequila haven, there was no such thing as a bad catch. Our panel spent a quick 15 minutes each with some of the best tequilas out there. Here’s the rundown—no sweaty palms, awkward silences or emergency escape plans required. Note: All tequilas tasted were 100% blue agave. 88 / the tasting panel / april 2010 The Aztec and Mayan influence on the graphics and the packaging makes for an artisan approach to PaQui.
