The ready appeal of Vinho Verde and Portugal's international-style red blends has opened the door for producers whose wines aspire to communicate place and quality as much as they convey style. In May, a Wines of Portugal seminar led by Keith Goldston, MS provided an opportunity to blind taste many of the wines curated by Joshua Greene for the "50 Great Portuguese Wines" collection as well as those being poured by 25 produc- ers who were gathered at the Merchant's Exchange building in San Francisco for an annual trade tasting. Blending is common, which makes blind tasting particularly challenging, so the tables have been turned this month and you're challenged to make the connection between the varietal composition and tasting note to region of origin and, for the more advanced, the producer. Our thanks to WSET educator Joanna Breslin for her kind assistance with samples during the walk-around tasting. ➊ Malvasia; distinct saline minerality, nutty, lemon zest aromas with round, creamy apple and structure from high dry extract. ➋ Alvarinho; white stone fruit and green citrus aromas, full-bodied with complex, intense flavors of white peach, fresh herbs and stony minerals. ➌ Alfrocheiro; floral with rich, tart cherry and brown spice flavors; medium weight, balanced and precise with persistent finish. ➍ Baga; aromatic with red cherry, tobacco and dried herbs, lean flavors with crisp tannins and a complex finish. ➎ Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão; deep red and black fruit with bright, balanced flavors on medium body and tannins. ➏ A 25-variety field blend based on the Tourigas and Tintas; deep black fruit with notes of cedar, black licorice, leather and mélange of baking spices, generous acidity and length. ➐ Tinta Roriz, Syrah, Touriga Nacional and Franca, Castelão, Alicante Bouchet; floral, savory blue plum and roasted meat with resolved tannins and red-fruited finish.
