Many categories of spirits experienced a marked increase this year, most notably, American craft whiskey, gin and single malt Scotch. Also of note this year was the increased number of entries for the Chinese signature spirit, baijiu. Often a harbinger of trends in the marketplace, the San Francisco World Spirits Competition is considered to be the rite of passage for top quality spirits as it has 39 of the world's top professional palates serving as judges. Every year at this event we see the latest emerging trends in the spirits category, and the results often prove to be a launchpad for burgeoning trends to be taken seriously. Prior to our event, smaller categories such as pisco, calvados, cachaça and mezcal were little known in this country; now bartenders and journalists worldwide turn their attention to our results to gauge the marketplace. Of particular note this year were the growing number of American distilled products. I'm particularly excited about the rise in quality American whiskey. As in the past, we were thrilled by the results and are proud to congratulate this year's winners. Due to space constraints, we are only able to list the Double Gold, Gold and Silver medal winners here; complete results can be found at www.sfspiritscomp.com. If your product is in the listings below, you deserve a place in spotlight. At THE TASTING PANEL, we look for- ward to working with your brands in the coming months. —Anthony Dias Blue, Executive Director The San Francisco World Spirits Competition hosted its 14th annual compe- tition on March 21–24 at the elegant and accomodating Hotel Nikko in down- town San Francisco. As usual, it was an exhilirating, if exhausting, adventure with some of the world's greatest—and latest—spirits as our intrepid judges, working in 12 panels, sipped and spat their way through the entries.
