After a flight into Louisville and winding country roads, patrons will be lumped into tours with non-industry people asking: "Wait, you mean bourbon is a whiskey?" Since you're a member of the trade, let's get you hooked up with people who can give you behind-the-scenes tours and special tastings. Buffalo Trace 113 Great Buffalo Trace, Frankfort, KY Technically, this picturesque beauty is not on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail since Buffalo Trace is not a member of the Kentucky Distillers Association. But let's not let bourbon politics get in the way of your good time. This historic distillery will steal your heart and take you back in time. I recommend bypassing the tasting room and setting a barrel tasting with Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley. For more info, contact Matt Higgins at mghiggins@buffalotrace.com Maker's Mark 3350 Burk Spring Rd, Loretto, KY How would you like to dip your own bottle of Maker's Mark in red wax? On a special tour, you can. When you get to the whiskey, you'll be in the bourbon industry's most artistic tasting room. In a special artistic barrel room, bourbon's finest art piece—created by legendary glass sculptor Dale Chihuly—shimmers in bourbon glory. For more info, contact Sydina Bradshaw at sydina.bradshaw@makersmark.com Wild Turkey 1525 Tyrone Rd, Lawrenceburg, KY Campari recently did all bourbon lovers a favor when it invested more than $100 million into the Wild Turkey Distillery. One of my longtime personal favorites, Wild Turkey may very well be the future best selling bourbon. The man behind it all, Jimmy Russell, is still as ornery and sharp as ever. If you'd like a private tour with Jimmy or his son, Eddie, email Katrina Egbert at Katrina.Egbert@campari.com Distilled Spirits Epicenter / Moonshine University 801 S 8th St, Louisville, KY This gem of a facility misses many mainstream media bourbon write-ups, but it's a true gift that specializes in education. At Moonshine University, you can learn the art of distillation, vodka-flavoring techniques and all the production laws associated with booze. If you're a spirits geek, you may want to skip the rest of Kentucky and just camp out here. Contact Colin Blake at registrar@MoonshineUniversity.com Evan Williams Bourbon Experience 528 West Main St., Louisville, KY The new Evan Williams Bourbon Experience sets the standard for showcasing bourbon history. In a special video, actors portray late 1700s era settlers, including Evan Williams. A behind the scenes tour will give you a close up look of the distillery inside this magnificent facility, where the shiny copper still churns out a barrel a day. For more info on the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience, contact James Crowe at jcrowe@heavenhill.com The Evan Williams Bourbon Experience is a must for history buffs.
