DSEA Elections Who will lead DSEA into the future? You decide. Your vote is important. resented here are the photos and statements of members seeking your vote. The only contested race is for representatives from Sussex County running for the DSEA Exec. Board (see right). As a result, ONLY Sussex County members will receive a ballot. The candidates for all the other races are elected pending ratification by the DSEA Exec. Board at their March 4, 2013 meeting. Sussex County members for whom we have email addresses will be sent an email on February 1 with information on casting their ballot online. Sussex County members for whom we have no email address will receive a paper ballot mailed to their home with instructions for going online to cast their ballot or for sending back the paper ballot. Should you mistakenly vote both ways, the first one received will be the one counted. The deadline for returning your paper ballot to Intelliscan, not P DSEA (use envelope provided) is February 15, 2013. For online voting, the deadline is 11:50pm, also February 15. To see the current list of DSEA officers and Exec. Board members, go to www.dsea.org/AboutDSEA/ WhosWho.html. But DSEA elections are not over You will notice on page 11 that only four people are running for seven vacancies to be DSEA delegates to the NEA Representative Assembly Per DSEA Policy, nomi. nations for the remaining three spots will be taken at the DSEA Representative Assembly on March 9, 2013, and voted on by the delegates there. If you are interested in running, please make sure that a delegate is there to place your name in nomination, and that this person can speak to your qualifications or level of interest, should you not be present. For NEA director - 3-year term Elected pending Executive Board ratification Mike Hoffmann I am currently serving as your DSEA Vice President and would be honored to continue representing you in the role of NEA Director. Delaware has one seat on the NEA Board of Directors, and it is important that we have a voice and input in federal education policy and legislation. I have been involved at the local, state and national levels of our association from the time I joined the education workforce. I have been a local building rep., local officer, negotiations team member, and the political action chair. At the state level, I have been on the DSEA Executive Board since 2003 and a state officer since 2007. I currently sit on the Delaware Teacher Center Board and the United Way Education Advisory Council. At the national level, I am currently on the Emerging Leaders Training Cadre, Leading the Professions work group, the Respect Cadre, and a graduate of the NEA Leaders for Tomorrow program. www.dsea.org Since Hoffmann is the only candidate, he is automatically elected, pending Executive Board ratification. As your NEA Director, I will continue to keep informed on the issues that affect you, and I will continue to work hard to make sure our federal delegation and the leadership of the NEA understand your interests and concerns. Recognizing that our organization is member driven, one of my priorities will be to continue to connect and build relationships with For DSEA Exec. Board - Sussex County Vote for two Amy Johnson Kevin Elzie Currently, I am a paraprofessional at G.W. Carver Academy, Indian River School Johnson District. On my local level, I serve as my building's representative, a Political Action Leader, and I served as a delegate to the 2012 DSEA RA convention (spring). On the state level, I serve on the Policy Task Force, ESP Professional Task Force, and Ethnic Minority Action Committee. At the national level, I participate with the 2012-2013 Leaders for Tomorrow. I attended the NEA-RA as a local delegate and I have been asked to be a part of M.A.P., Members Advisory Panel. I believe the knowledge and opportunities that I have gained and experienced throughout my professional career, have prepared me for this opportunity - sitting on the Executive Board and representing Sussex County I can ably repre. sent my area professionals and certainly, students and their families in the county . I would like to run for DSEA Executive Board to advocate for all educators and Elzie those in and around the field of education. Two things I like to see are a fair observation system for all education employees and a solid testing program for all Delaware students. The NEA Director serves a three-year term representing DSEA members on the National Education Association Board of Directors. He/she also serves as part of DSEA's Leadership Team, along with the president, vice president and treasurer, with an automatic seat on the DSEA Executive Board. Patricia Murrell I am writing this letter to express my interest in being one of the representatives for Sussex Murrell County on the Executive Board of DSEA. I have been an executive board member for 6 years and this has been a great learning experience that I would like to continue. I have worked for political candidates that I felt would make a positive difference for our state and our local. I am a teacher at a special school (Howard T. Ennis) and I feel that I bring a different perspective to the group. I have worked on some of the focus groups concerning RTTT trying to make the new evaluation systems workable for a very different teacher population. I have brought concerns from my school and my district and I have taken back very important information to my school and my district. I am very proud to serve Sussex County, Indian River School District and Howard T. Ennis School by representing them on the Executive Board and hope to continue on the board for the next two years. members all over the state in all job categories. I believe we have become a politically powerful organization, and know we can use this strength to gain improvements in the work lives of our members. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to continue working for you as a state leader. Nov./Dec. 2012 DSEA ACTION! 9
