DSEA Read Across America Student Contests expanded • Sponsored by DSEA, The News Journal's Newspapers in Education Program and FuturTech Consulting • Open to all students in Delaware's public schools Horton Hears A Who! (Grades K-8) Students have the option of creating either a poster or a video depicting the lesson in Dr. Seuss's classic book. The project should focus on respecting each other and seeing the importance in every person. Students should attempt to connect Seuss's lesson to their own lives and their school. This project is an opportunity for students to think about bullying and how it affects others. The animals in the jungle represent the bullies and the Whos are the victims who literally have no voice. Horton is the only one who is willing to stand up to the bullies and protect the victims. Each entry should be fun and entertaining, but carry a strong message. The Butter Battle Book (Grades 9-12) Students may either create a video as a group or write a research paper as an individual. The projects should relate The Butter Battle Book to the events in the Cold War. Students should explain the lesson Dr. Seuss was trying to portray The projects . should then relate The Butter Battle Book to current times; has the world listened to Dr. Seuss's message? (ex. British Empire, Middle East, etc.) The high school projects will promote reading through an understanding of history, current events, and the effects Dr. Seuss's satire and allegories have had on the world. Teacher incentives to encourage students to enter For the first 40 teachers who let DSEA know that they have students entering this contest, we will send them a copy of either Horton Hears a Who!
