44 • LMGI COMPASS | Fall 2023 2002 Creating IN THE ZONE John Grant: There was another meeting at the Biltmore, where the idea for the photo show was presented and a call for photos was put out. Peter Gluck: I remember being at the Unreel Locations' space at the former Seeley's furniture store when we began looking at photos for the In The Zone (ITZ) show. Bob Craft: We spread the photos out on the floor at first—these were prints, it was pre-digital. I remember Lori sorting through all the pictures. It was very cool and exciting. We really wanted to do this! Beth Tate: We eventually stuck the photos up on the wall organized by category—Americana, Sci-Fi, Around the World in the 30-Mile Zone, A Day in the Life. There were about 50 people there and we voted on hundreds of photos that day. The top 100 were to be sent to the jurors who would be selecting the final images for the show. Pamella D'Pella: I remember thinking, 'I hope this floor is clean enough!' I went 'urban' so that the least represented communities could be represented. I pulled my images from that community. My barbershop picture got put up on the wall and later made it into the show— and the newspaper! Stevie Nelson: Loving photography, I got very excited about the idea of location professionals being showcased as artists in their own right. I went out and started specifically shooting for images to submit for the ITZ show, along with pulling from my files. I submitted eight to ten images and ended up with two in the show. 2002 Call for photo submissions at Unreel Locations' Seeley's showroom for In The Zone Photos courtesy Peg Meehan and Joaquin Nunez/Unreel Locations Kristan Wagner Jill Naumann Stevie Nelson and Bear Davis Beth Tate and Todd Christensen
