8 • LMGI COMPASS | Fall 2023 IN THE NEWS LMGI at 2023 Comic-Con Comic-Con International has been the host and supporting convention of the Comics Arts Conference (CAC), the nation's leading academic conference about comics and comic arts, including Hollywood pop culture, film and television. It's attended by not just fans, but also all the major studios, entertainers, producers and above-and-below-the-line crew. Following in the footsteps of our friends at the Art Directors Guild and Costume Designers Guild, we at the LMGI started our own educational panels at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) in July 2013. In July 2023, this year's 11th Annual LMGI Hollywood Location Scouts panel featured as panelists: members Ian Easterbrook (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Spider-Man: No Way Home), Ilt Jones (The Suicide Squad, Captain Marvel), Andrea Keener (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Fear Street), Naomi Liston (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Game of Thrones), Matt Palmer (The Last of Us, The Stand) and was once again moderated by LMGI President John Rakich (See, The Changeling). The event was sponsored by the Big Bear Lake Film Office, DGC Ontario, Inland Empire Film Services, Menifee Film Office, Riverside County Film Commission and Temecula Film Office. The auditorium was at full capacity and led to a lively discussion that continued into the hallways afterward. Matt Palmer/LMGI, panelist from Alberta, Canada, said, "There was so much love for the movies during our panel, and I think all of us there acknowledged how powerful that was, especially during these challenging times for our industry. The LMGI's presence at Comic-Con is so very important in continuing to highlight the role of location professionals to others in the industry and to the general public." Ian Easterbrook/LMGI said, "I really enjoyed my experience on this year's LMGI panel at SDCC—the opportunity to share the details and highlight the importance of our contribution to the filmmaking process with a room full of excited listeners was so much fun, especially alongside such a talented group of location professionals from around the world." This year's Comic-Con also included another big step forward for our craft.
