www.postmagazine.com 2 POST SEPT/OCT 2023 EDITOR'S NOTE n the new sci-fi feature The Creator, direc- tor Gareth Edwards presents his vision of the not-so-dis- tant future and the world's relation- ship with artificial intelligence. The film is loaded with visual effects, but attempts to stay grounded in reality, with many "New Asia" landscapes providing the back- drop for the 20th Century Studios feature. The Creator takes into consideration many of the questions that AI raises today, including its benefits and dangers, the way it can affect relationships, and the chance that it can be- come sentient. Edwards traveled throughout Southeast Asia to create the feature, relying on a compact Sony FX3 for much of the shoot. He would later partner with ILM, and a number of other visual effects studios, to bring his vision to life. Post contributor Iain Blair spoke with the director recently, and provides one-on-one cover- age in his "Director's Chair" column, which begins on page 10. Edwards explains his thinking behind the film, and how he took a different approach to post production and integrating the film's 1,700 visual effects. CGW editor Kendra Ruczak continues our coverage by speaking with the team at ILM, which began the effects process by viewing Edward's test footage, with its stunning loca- tions. Beginning on page 12, Kendra reports on the collaboration between Edwards and ILM, and how the director trusted the VFX team to execute his overall vision. Online, Kendra and I are joined by Post contributor Heath Firestone for a podcast discus- sion about the film; its editing, soundtrack and visual effects; and our take on what the future might look like. Visit postmagazine.com to hear our thoughts. Beginning on page 22, our "Education" feature checks in with a number of colleges and universities that are working to prepare students for their not-so-distant future in the media & entertainment industry. Many schools are equipped with the same "tools of the trade" that today's top filmmakers are employing, and educators are not content with labeling work as a "student" film anymore, as the quality is comparable to much of today's primetime program- ming. I encourage you to check out The King's Academy's YouTube series Star Wars: Gray Trials. This West Palm Beach, FL, high school is using one of its two (!) virtual production stages to create a show that resembles those streaming on Disney+. I was blown away by the level of quality these young students delivered! Elsewhere in this issue, we have "Music Video" coverage (page 16) on the latest re- leases from The Rolling Stones and Demi Lovato. In fact, editor Sofia Kerpan, of Modern Post, shares insight into her work on Olivia Rodrigo's Vampire music video, which took home the 2023 MTV Video Music Award (VMA) for "Best Editing." Directed by Petra Collins, with additional editing by David Checel, Vampire has garnered more than 55M views on YouTube since its June release. There's lots more to check out, including our "Emmy Contenders" feature on page 18, and the way "Artificial Intelligence" can influence post workflows, as well as artists' careers (pages 28-29). Post will be in Manhattan for NAB Show New York from October 24-26, so stop by our booth at the Jacob Javits Convention Center to say hi and to let us know what you've got your eye on for the year ahead.
