2 FA L L 2 0 2 3 I C A S Q U A R T E R L Y As I write this, the big news in the North American entertainment industry is the shutdown over pay issues. There's also considerable discussion regarding the use of AI, potentially replacing workers. (See the related article by Kurt Kassulke CAS in this issue.) The Cinema Audio Society supports those seeking an equitable resolution to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes so the hundreds of thousands of workers in our industry can return to making the creative products enjoyed by the hundreds of millions in our audience. Meanwhile, progress is being made in other areas. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited new members to its Sound Branch, including CAS members Stéphane Bucher CAS, Julian Howarth CAS, Anthony Ortiz CAS, and Viktor Prášil CAS AMPS. This year, they also invited selected boom operators and assistant sound editors. The boom operators, who frequently work with CAS production mixers, are Orin Beaton, Arthur Fenn, and Randy Johnson. On a personal note, I'm especially excited about Randy, with whom I've done 15 movies and many other projects. I salute the Academy for recognizing the important contributions they make to our art form. Finally, the Cinema Audio Society has many members across the world, with large concentrations in cities beyond Los Angeles, ranging from San Francisco, Atlanta, and New York in the United States to Vancouver, London, and beyond. If CAS members are interested in getting together for educational or social events, please let us know so we can facilitate. Our Events Committee already has great plans for this year, but we can add events to serve members internationally. Have a great summer and I hope to see you all at an event somewhere soon. Peter F. Kurland CAS To educate and inform the general public and the motion picture and television industry that effective sound is achieved by a creative, artistic, and technical blending of diverse sound elements.
