Resources and Opportunities Summer eLearning courses to run June 12 to July 30 Maybe one of these online offerings will work for you this summer. These are the courses (subject to change until registration begins) which will be offered by eLearning Delaware during the Summer 2013 session: 1. Collaboration in the Digital Classroom Discover learning at Longwood Gardens Longwood's on-site and online professional development opportunities for teachers use their educational resources and expertise as a foundation of their school gardening courses. The on-site courses integrate classroom content and the Gardens through a combination of tours, lectures, and hands-on activities, while their online courses provide instructor-facilitated professional development. They seek to provide you with creative and practical ways to augment classroom curriculum to inspire a new generation of learners who value plants and stewardship of the environment. Courses offered on-site: • School Gardening 101: July 8–9, 2013 • School Gardening 102: July 10–11, 2013 Act 48 credit available for PA teachers. Credit for DE teachers available through the Delaware Teacher Center. Free Microsoft EXCEL training now available There is a new course in the state's professional development/ Blackboard site for Microsoft Excel 2007, course number 2241. The course is divided into 16 sections and each section has its own lesson plan, exercise files, and assessment. You only need to take the assessment if you want to receive professional development credit in PDMS. Credit will be Hours Only (NOT FOR RELICENSURE IN DEEDS). The course is entirely self-paced, available 24/7, and is open until June 30, 2014. It will take approximately 30 minutes to complete all of the exercises in each section. The course content can be used for professional development credit or as a resource to help you accomplish a specific task. You must register for the section in the Professional Development Management System (PDMS) in order to access the training materials. Maximizing the Power of the Interactive Whiteboard Registration (https://login.doe. k12.de.us) closes on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 5:00PM. Course offerings are dependent upon minimum (12) and maximum (24) enrollments. Submit your name and a message to be sent into Mars orbit on the MAVEN spacecraft. Anyone on planet Earth is welcome to participate. To create a log-in you must be 18 or older. For students under 18 who want to enter, they need to ask a parent or educator for help. Messages, which must be in the form of a haiku poem, will be voted on by the public. The top three most popular entries will be sent to Mars onboard the MAVEN spacecraft and will be prominently displayed on the MAVEN website. Messages must be in English. Fellowships available for less experienced science teachers The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) is offering comprehensive professional development fellowships for new teachers (second through fifth year) to participate in the New Science Teacher Academy, a year-long professional development and mentoring program at no cost to teachers. Applicants must spend more than half of their schedule working with middle or high school science students. Emphasizing quality science teaching, enhanced teacher confidence, classroom excellence, and solid content knowledge, participants experience online and face-toface support, as well as access to comprehensive educational resources. Academy Fellow benefits include: • All-expense paid (accommodations, airfare, meals, and registration fees) trip to the NSTA National Conference on Science Education • Full membership in the National Science Teachers Association • Access to facilitated, web-based curriculum devoted to content and classroom pedagogy • Professional learning web seminars conducted by leaders in science education • Attendance at a professional development institute or a research dissemination conference. The goal of the program is to use mentoring and other professional development resources to support science teachers during the often challenging, initial teaching years and to help them stay in the profession.
