Students honor their champions I like to encourage students to participate in contests that broaden their learning experiences. The more knowledge we allow our students to obtain the better citizens they become. Dominique Collier, a senior at Lake Forest H.S., thanks her brother, Nicholas Rettig, for his support of her efforts, winning first place in the high school division of the Computer Graphic Arts contest. With her teacher Amy Reed, Shelby Anderson, 11th grade, wins second place for her Computer Graphics Art. Karen Crouse Lake Forest High School Financial Secretary Vice President, DSEA Romario Pierre, a sophomore at Lake Forest H.S., wins third place in the high school division for his Computer Graphic Arts project. Wendy Turner's second grade class at Thurgood Marshall E.S.wins second place in the K-4 division of the Art contest. Denise Waples' second grade class at Banneker E.S. in Milford celebrates their first place win in the K-4 Art Contest. I feel that it is important to showcase student artwork. By doing this it shows them that their ideas count. To have the opportunity to attach "Human Rights" to their lesson on designing a poster was perfect. I want them to know more about the world we live in and to expand their thinking to a more global existence. Not everyone in the world has the right to an education, or freedom of speech or many of the other civil liberties we have in this country. Mark Rudinoff Smyrna Middle School Art Instructor Smyrna E.A. Tying for third in the grades 5-8 division of the Art contest are Chris Buntin, an 8th grader at Smyrna M.S. (center) and Talia Collier, a 5th grader at Maclary E.S. in Christina. With them are Mark Rudinoff of Smyrna and Talia's teacher, Joanne Gardner. www.dsea.org Kyle Spillane, a 7th grader at W.T. Chipman M.S., in Lake Forest, accepts second place in the 5-8 division for his artwork. With him (left) is Karen Crouse, who encouraged him to enter. Presenting the Award (right) is Maria Ruffin of Capital, member of the HCR Task Force. The first place high school artist is Omar Escobar who drew this exquisite likeness of Oprah Winfrey, above. With him is Amy Reed. Escobar is a senior at Lake Forest H.S. On the podium again are members of Claudia Martin's second grade class, this time accepting awards for 3rd place in the K-4 Art Contest. Shane Wilson, an 8th grader at Smyrna M.S. is congratulated by his art teacher Mark Rudinoff. Placing second in the high school art contest is Katelynne Ongaco, a 10th grader at Lake Forest H.S. Amy Reed encouraged her to enter. T oday our students sit next to children of different colors, races, backgrounds, religions and cultures. They need to understand who the brave souls are that made that happen. The next civil rights fight may be just around the corner. Understanding our history will help them prepare for it and be brave enough to make a difference one day. Wendy M. Turner 2nd Grade Teacher Mt.
