NEA's Read Across America Day Here's a sneak peek at next year's Read Across America contests Book Focus: "The Sneetches," by Dr. Seuss Theme: Learning to live together "Now, the Star-Belly Sneetches Had bellies with stars. The Plain-Belly Sneetches Had none upon thars. Those stars weren't so big. They were really so small You might think such a thing wouldn't matter at all." • Billboard drawing (i.e., horizontal, with a ratio of 1 (height) to 1.5 (width) no larger than 24" tall by 48" wide, • Video (3 minute maximum) about how different groups in our community – real or imaginary – can overcome their differences, and why this is important to everyone, or • Essay (600-800 words, high school students only). We urge Delaware's public school students to submit a: Donna Gustufson is proud of her 4th grade student, Lexie Barrie, of Marshall Elementary School in Christina. Lexie placed third in the K-8 division of the Poster Contest. Thomas Czachorowski, 1st grade, Providence Creek Charter School, wins second place in the K-8 poster contest. With him are (from left) his teacher Tarah Curl, Mom Jackie, and Grandmom Mary Ann. Mikayla Oeckels, 9th grade, Sussex Central H.S., Indian River, wins first place in the high school essay contest. Encouraging her to enter is Melanie Marshall, R.N., health sciences teacher (right). Looking back at your great students fter the News Journal printed the winners of DSEA's Read Across America Contest, we visited each classroom and took pictures of the teachers and students receiving their awards and prizes. Prizes included gift certificates, Cat in the Hat award certificates and logo items. This year's book focus was Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who, whose theme deals with respect for everyone and, specifically, anti-bullying. This contest is also sponsored by the News Journal Newspapers in Education Program and FuturTech Consulting – computer sales and network specialists. A First place K-8 video winners are (from left) Brandon Saldan and Joseph Tew, Thurgood Marshall Elementary School 4th graders, students of Nancy Ventresca. New Castle School's Adult Integration class students are the First Place Video winners in the high school division. Third place K-8 video winners are the members of Tara Lynch's second grade class at Gallaher Elementary School, Christina.
