After spending a couple of decades at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts, Musical Theatre West made Long Beach its exclusive home, beginning with the 1999-2000 season. Since then, Musical Theatre West has worked hard to enrich the cultural life of Southern California through the presentation of established musicals, development of new works and expansion of its Youth Cultural Program. On tap for this season are two classics with Annie and Cats, the new Summer of Love and the theatre adaption of the romantic comedy film The Wedding Singer. In addition, The City Council of Long Beach officially recognized International City Theatre as the resident professional theatre company of the city. While the stage is International City Theatre's main concern, the organization also works closely with minority groups to raise money for scholarships. The Playhouse produces 16 shows annually that are performed on either its main stage or in the studio theatre. For the upcoming season, the Long Beach Playhouse has lined up The Importance of Being Earnest, Murder by the Book, The Plight Before Christmas, Moon Over Buffalo, _Almost, Maine, The Taming of the Shrew, Night Must Fall and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.
