LONGBEACHMAGAZINE.COM THIS MONTH IN LONG BEACH WRITTEN BY DANIEL RAMIREZ The 4th annual Boricua Festival had people on their feet on August 8th at Queen Mary Park. Proud Puerto Ricans and friends danced to live salsa and reggaeton and enjoyed food and cultural attractions from the homeland "La Isla del Encanto" or Land of Enchantment. An estimated 105,000 spectators cheered on flying contestants and their aircrafts at the Red Bull Flugtag, August 21. Thousands lined the Downtown waterfront and blanketed the Shoreline Aquatic Park to watch hopefuls add the most air to their wings. The large crowds made this one of the biggest single-day events in LB. Local art lovers gathered at the Long Beach Museum of Art on August 11 for "Arts in the Long Run" event hosted by the Arts Council for Long Beach with We Love Long Beach and The Jazz Angels. The event raised funds and awareness about the cuts that have affected arts education throughout the city. Teams from around the world fired through the Marine Stadium on their dragon vessels for the 14th Annual Dragon Boat Festival. The event held July 31-August 1, hosted 180 teams that raced their dragon boats to the sound of Chinese drums. Visitors enjoyed art, food, traditional dance, and martial arts. The Princeton Review has ranked Cal State Long Beach as "Best of the West." The honor takes into account academic achievements, campus life and the student body. CSULB is one of 120 schools to receive the title in the west. The newest attraction in town — the Wine Tasting Trolley — treated guests to a stop at the Jazz Festival as part of a second special tour on August 13. Those aboard enjoy appetizers and vintage wines while multi Emmy-winning T.V. reporter, Liz Anderson, narrated LB's Art Deco history. On August 5, Mayor Bob Foster with community leaders welcomed Long Beach Summer Night Lights. The program focuses on providing youth and family summer activities and job opportunities to troubled communities in the city. SCENE &HEARD A FLYING CHANCE DRAGON RACES BORICUA FESTIVAL LONG LIVE THE ARTS! CSULB AMONG THE BEST ALL ABOARD! A BRIGHTER SUMMER McBride Skatepark has been chosen by the Tony Hawk Foundation as a pledge-drive recipient in its annual "Stand up for Skateparks" fundraiser. The foundation aims at funding skate parks in the country to better the youth and community. The fundraiser will take place in Beverly Hills on October 17. SKATE CHAMP LENDS A HAND 21
