SEPTEMBER 2010 FOOD & WINE
Drinking from stemware feels a little surreal
in District Wine – the new wine bar in
the Lafayette building in the East Village
Arts District.
With District's atmosphere, reaching for a
heavy mug filled with espresso and steamed
milk would feel more natural. Art rock plays
quietly in the background, huge paintings —
made by a guy who lives upstairs — hang
over soft couches, wingback armchairs group
around coffee tables, floor lamps glow dimly.
The place feels more like an indie coffee
house than a bar.
This is the atmosphere the owners, Angela
Mesna, 28, and Mark Dunton, 31, were
going for.
"Our focus was to make people feel like
they're coming into our home," Mesna said
while pouring wine one afternoon. "You can
just sit back, read a book and relax."
