46 / the tasting panel / june 2014 MILESTONES Seen from Landmark Vineyard's valley floor winery, the cone- shaped peaks of Hood Mountain and Sugarloaf Ridge are distinct Sonoma landmarks. Named for the loaves of sugar sold in the 19th century, the surrounding 3,900 acres of Sugarloaf Ridge State Park was once home to the Wappo Indians, whose village was sited at the head- waters of Sonoma Creek. Today, the state park and the adjoining Hood Mountain Regional Park insure that the winery's timeless view of the Western Mayacamas will be protected from urbaniza- tion for generations to come.
