32  /  the tasting panel  /  june 2014 T he wait is finally over! The highly anticipated 2014 World Cup is now just days away, and the intensity of the impending competition may be hotter than the host country's dazzling Carnivale dancers. As all eyes turn toward South America to watch the world's most widely viewed sporting event, VEEV and funkin provide THE TASTING PANEL with the last installment of scrumptious cocktails to satisfy the palate and bring the distinct flavor of Brazil stateside. This round in our series of Brazilian-inspired cocktails brings us to Pearl's Liquor Bar in Los Angeles, a fierce competitor in its own right. Elegant, graceful and with a lot of whimsy, walking through the doors at Pearl's feels like following Alice down the rabbit hole back to a colorful and fantastical Prohibition era speakeasy. With three fully-equipped bars, weekly live music, beautifully themed, lush patios overlooking the ever-so-chic and glamorous Hollywood locale, Pearl's is a true gem. "Pearl's will definitely please those looking for a memorable and fun time in a very special setting," explains Matt Greene, co-owner of Pearl's and the neighboring Rock & Reilly's Irish Pub. "Whether you are gathering to enjoy a sports match or to socialize in the L.A. sun, expect to do so with great cocktails, pre- mium products (both on and off the menu) and plenty to look at," smiled Greene as we admired the views of the Sunset Strip with our deliciously crafted cocktails in hand. As if emulating the spicy yet sweet persona of the Brazilian people, The Red Pearl is a cocktail worth diving down to the bottom of the deep blue sea for. The natural and nuanced flavor of VEEV blends perfectly with the fresh mango tartness of the funkin Brazilian to deliver a bold, spicy flavor to the taste buds. VEEV Spirit's 70 proof provides a solid base for a bartender's creative juices, while funkin's line of cocktail purées are distinguishably fresh and authentic. Continuing to keep things fresh, VEEV and funkin plan on adding to the excitement of the World Cup with interactive and fun marketing campaigns that will get everyone involved in the games. The VEEV Futbol Challenge, an online trivia game that can can be accessed through their Facebook page, gives fans an opportunity to test their knowledge on all things World Cup for a chance to win a trip to Brazil! While we may not know which country will come out on top, we are all winners when it comes to great beverages, thanks to VEEV and funkin. Here's an insider's tip: Head to Pearl's Liquor Bar, grab a mouth- watering VEEV and funkin cocktail and watch the events unfold at the stadiums in Rio—although some may say the streets of L.A. are just as dramatic.
