I N R E M E M B R A N C E e cross paths with many people over the course of a career. Some are quick acquaintances, some become regular colleagues, while still others we are fortunate to call friends. Paul Trautman CAS Production mixer Paul Trautman CAS passed away at his home in Los Angeles in March 2026 at the age of 70. "Traut," as he was affectionately known by his peers, began his sound career in the transfer department at Location Sound Services in the early 1980's. One day, he answered a call from producers Gail and John Purdy requesting a sound mixer for a bank commercial in Glendale. Since Paul knew no others were available, he said he could do it. Then he quickly called people he knew to answer questions as to what he needed to know and borrowed or rented equipment—and from there on became a sound mixer. Traut worked primarily on documentaries, many with The Cousteau Society and National Geographic. He also mixed on commercials and feature films, including An Inconvenient Truth and It Might Get Loud. He had a close and ongoing relationship with Erich Joiner and the production company Tool. His longtime boom swingers included Alenka Pavlin and Tove Hoch, who boomed for him for 25 years. Bruce Bisenz was a major influence on Paul's career. Traut was known for his particularly generous treatment of crew, his love of quality audio gear, and his electric blue VW Eurovan. He was known as a happy, positive guy with a great ear. Cinematographer and good friend Bob Yeoman put up this marquee when they were working together once. The CAS extends our condolences to Paul's family and friends. W
