2 FA L L 2 0 2 6 I C A S Q U A R T E R L Y Hello from the Cinema Audio Society! I want to lead off by recognizing Phillip W. Palmer's selection as the next CAS Career Achievement Award recipient. Phil has had an outstanding career with five Emmy nominations and 11 CAS Award nominations, including a win for Better Call Saul. He has also contributed a huge amount of time and effort to the CAS, serving on our Board of Directors several times and as Vice President. He has been very helpful to me in my time on the Board, and has bailed me out on location in New Mexico, loaning equipment on short notice. I am delighted for my friend's achievements! I'm also happy to announce the formation of two new CAS Award categories! As the industry changes and release platforms evolve, we have noticed a growing number of entries which don't fit well into the seven existing categories. To resolve this, we have created a Short Form category covering non-animated material under 21 minutes, and a Non-Theatrical Animated category covering those animated projects that did not receive theatrical release. We hope this will allow more submissions to compete against similar projects. Category details and submission rules are available on the CAS website. CAS is continuing with some great events this year. As you may have seen, we just completed a great event in Chicago and our first "Ask Me Anything" (aka AMA), a members-only meeting where a selected individual or group will join one of our forums to talk about a topic, whether a technique or tool they use, or facets of their career. Moderated by Charles Dayton CAS MPSE, the first AMA had Marc Fishman CAS and Jon Greasley CAS discussing their work with the CAS Industry Technical Standards Committee and the establishing of updated ATSC loudness specs and dialogue standards. A recap of the event along with a full article discussing the changes are included in this issue. Future panelists will be announced to members via email and other CAS membership communication channels. Links to these events will be provided upon receipt of a member's RSVP. If you have an idea for a topic, let us know. For those in the Los Angeles area, we just held a miniature golf event. I hope you were able to attend! A recap is in this issue, and photos are on our website. Future events will be announced soon, including The Sounding Board v6.0 taking place in Los Angeles on November 15. This issue of the Quarterly is packed with some great articles that I encourage you to read, but I'll specifically mention CAS member Chris Welcker's great memories of working with production sound mixer Kirk Francis CAS. I never worked with Kirk, but I did do movies with his boom and utility and heard wonderful stories. I also ended up with a copy of his cookbook! Happy reading, Peter F. Kurland CAS THE PRESIDENT'S LETTER To educate and inform the general public and the motion picture and television industry that effective sound is achieved by a creative, artistic, and technical blending of diverse sound elements.
