4 FA L L 2 0 2 6 I C A S Q U A R T E R L Y There have been some pretty big developments behind the scenes since our summer "Meet the Winners" issue, including two new CAS Awards categories—Short Form and Non-Theatrical Animated—and the selection of this year's CAS Career Achievement Award recipient, production sound mixer Phillip W. Palmer CAS. Press releases containing additional information will be out shortly. We've also launched our new "Ask Me Anything" sessions, with the first one taking place in late July and covering the updated A/85 specifications—Ceri Thomas CAS provides a recap. On the topic of A/85, Jon Greasley CAS disseminates information about the update and what it really means to us as mixers in his article, "ATSC Loudness Spec Update: A Dialogue-Gated Squeaky Wheel." Speaking of dialogue, in his article, "Permanent Dialogue Separation: Isolating Voice, Reverb, and Noise Across All Stages of Post for Improved Control," Gregor Bonse CAS shares an interesting workflow approach where the shotgun's audio is separated into those three main ingredients before things hit the dub stage—allowing greater control during the mix. Continuing with the dialogue theme, through his own experience and interviews with others, Daniel Vasquez V. CAS discusses processes for dubbing animation in different languages and approaches for retaining the same directorial intent across languages in his "Localization Mixing for Animation: How to Avoid Getting Lost in Translation" submission. Ever watch a reality competition show like Survivor or Fear Factor and wonder what those mixes look like? Terry Dwyer CAS shares his evolution of re-record mixing reality over the past 30 years—including for many reality competition shows. In his submission, "Music in the Mix: Score and Song in Dolby Atmos," Dennis Dembeck CAS MPSE interviews mixers about working with music in Dolby Atmos and the different considerations based on their particular job, speaking with a composer/ scoring mixer, a scoring mixer, and a dialogue/music re-recording mixer. At the CAS Awards ceremony in March, the inaugural Jeffrey S. Wexler Award for Advancement in Sound Technology was bestowed on recipients Evan Brooks and Peter Gotcher for the creation Pro Tools, and Glenn Sanders and Howard Stark for the development of the Zaxcom Deva. Interviews with the inventors are included here and were conducted by Whitney Worthen and I. In an effort to encourage a healthy working environment, Charles Dayton CAS MPSE discusses important layout considerations when designing a home studio—from desk height, speaker and monitor positioning, lighting, etc., in his article, "Studio Ergonomics and You!" One of our core missions here at the CAS is education—with a strong emphasis on mentorship. Chris Welcker CAS shares his memories—both professional and personal— working with his mentor, production sound mixer Kirk Francis CAS, who passed away in February. Chris's is a warm story of how one person's faith in the abilities of another gave that person the confidence to grow in their craft. Be sure to review the "Events Wrap-Up" and "Announcements," along with the "Been There Done That" and "The Lighter Side" submissions. If an article makes you think of a friend or colleague, send a link to the online version of the Quarterly, available on the CAS website. Have something to share? We'd love to hear from you! Email us at CASQuarterly@CinemaAudioSociety.org. Finally, I'd like to congratulate all our members who worked on Emmy-nominated shows or who themselves have received a nomination.
