50 • THE ARTISAN SUMMER 2023 We have both had the pleasure of working with JG (Judy Greer) in the past and truly she's a dream. When she sent a group text asking what we were up to, there was no questions that this would be the same, another chance to dream big with JG. There wasn't much prep time for this adventure, so it was very much that, a daily adventure of discovering what worked and what didn't in the hair and wig world. We knew the cast of the series "step right up" would have to look younger and more period-correct than the present-day cast for some flashbacks in the pilot. I had a full-lace front bang piece with a fall made for the younger "Bree/Josie" and went with a more golden natural blonde look. We then blew out Judy's natural wavy hair using hair products UNITE 7, seconds leave-in conditioner, Virtue 6-in-1 style guard, and the perfect ending split end serum, with a round Ibiza brush. To finish, I parted her natural hair down the center, adding toupee clips on each side of the part starting about a half-inch back from hairline to secure the bang and fall piece. We with a natural texture wig for "Reed" due to time. We used a John Blake human hair lace front wig and have a re-front done it using a mold fitting from Keegan's natural hairline. For Clay, we used a series of various temp colors and an air brush to go over any spots. For the current-day "Bree," we had a full custom lace front wig made. We did a wrap under the wig using a middle part. I would section the front of Judy's hair out from ear forward and braid both sections in loose braids downward, so when we pulled them up to secure, we had a tighter effect. I pin curled the rest of her and used a hairnet over it all. We would then apply the wig over the wrap, making sure the natural middle part lined up with the wig's middle part. I found that Bluebird glue from the tube worked best and held up all day with little touchup required. The rest of the cast was pretty straightforward. Key Liz Ferguson and I kept them all very simple and true to the nature of the current style. Rachel Bloom was a very simple look, and as the character developed, we made her a little more stylish. Krista was very simple in staying true to one style like a busy working woman would. This was truly the best cast and crew. We had so much fun collaborating with our cast and producers bringing this project to life. STYLIZING REBOOT
