62 • THE ARTISAN SUMMER 2023 In Memoriam EXTENDED FAMILY NEWS Andrea Joy Berman (1976-2023) Make-up Artist Andrea Joy has always loved make-up. She started her career in make-up in the dance world and then moved into local theater troupes. In mid-2006, she started doing make-up professionally after graduating from MUD (Make-Up Designory). She has had consistent work in the commercial world and has also worked on short films, music videos, weddings, fashion shows and print work. Andrea has worked with many celebrities, top commercial directors, and on Super Bowl commercials. Andrea Joy was born in Upstate New York and raised outside of Philadelphia in Langhorne, PA. She graduated cum laude and earned the Chancellor's Talent Award (scholarship) from the University of Massachusetts with a BFA in dance and a minor in psychology. Andrea continued to dance with a professional dance company through her pregnancy with her twins who were born in 2010. Andrea is celebrated by her husband, producer Richard Berman, and their children Kai and Naya. Mario Duran (1969-2023) Make-up Artist Mario Duran became a member of Local 706 in May of 1990. He entered Local 706 as a make-up artist on the Industry Experience Roster, and was a journeyman make-up artist but his true love was the "theater." In 2001, he went back to working exclusively as a theatrical make- up artist. He contributed his extensive make-up skills while working at the LA Opera, LA Philharmonic, Ahmanson Theatre, Mark Taper Forum, Hollywood Bowl, Pantages & Dolby Theatre. He also worked IRIS, Cirque Du Soleil while that show sat down here in Los Angeles at the Kodak Theatre. Mario also worked for MAC Cosmetics. He was extremely talented with both make-up and hair/wigs, with many praises and accolades by his peers. He was sassy, charismatic and so much fun to work with. He will be hugely missed by all of us. Mario is survived by his sister Martha (Cabrera) and his father Arthur Duran and numerous nephews and nieces. Susan Germaine (1941-2023) Journeyman Hair Stylist Although she passed her test with "better than a passing mark," Susie Germaine was actually too young to be sworn in, so they made her wait one month until her 21st birthday when she became a member of Local 706 in 1962. A few years ago, she was recognized for 50 years of membership, and was honored at the Alex Film Society in Glendale during a retrospective of the film Chinatown. Susie Germaine has approximately 90 credits to her name and is known for her legendary styling, both for period and contemporary work. Outspoken and direct but constructive and thoughtful, she never backed down from a challenge nor an argument with a producer. She set a standard for everyone in her craft. Known for commanding "better conditions" and innovative screen credits, Germaine was not only one of the "Big 5" hair stylists who were hired for all of the biggest and best shows of the 1970s, '80s and '90s, but she was also personal stylist for Barbra Streisand, Faye Dunaway, Jennifer Lopez, Kate Jackson, Goldie Hawn and Jeff Bridges. She truly was a "Hair Stylist to the Stars," a style influencer long before the term became used in social media. She was a star herself. Talented, stylish, sassy and much loved, that was Susie Germaine. She received a Primetime Emmy nomination for her work on Backstairs at the White House and was also nominated for a Hollywood Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Award in 2001. She is known for Chinatown, 1941, The Three Musketeers, Network, Nine to Five, Addams Family Values, The Mirror Has Two Faces, Beowulf and The Cell, plus the TV series Scarecrow and Mrs. King. Susie and Barbara Lorenz developed the professional hair product line Lorenz-Germaine. She was twice elected to the Local 706 Executive Board and was involved in developing the qualifications for the journeyman test. Ms. Germaine was a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Susan Germaine is survived by her children Tim McArdle and Candice Germaine and grandchildren Danielle Susan Morritz and Emily Jean Tagliere.
