14 • THE ARTISAN SUMMER 2023 CRAFT EDUCATION Hair Craft Education Our first Craft Education Event of 2023 was held on March 26. Thanks to Local 80, volunteers and our hardworking tech crew, we presented live and virtually experiencing the largest Zoom attendance since we started. We were fortunate enough to have fresh sandwiches, drinks and fruit salad provided for the meeting by First Entertainment Credit Union. Carmi spoke and answered questions about credit union services and how joining a financial community dedicated to people in our industry can make our financial lives smoother. They offer us everything from home and auto loans to investment services. As our amuse buche, Hair Craft President Jani Kleinbard demonstrated the new Shark Flex Tool. It's a tool we can recommend for our clients to use at home for curling and we're certain our Local 706 members would find creative ways to use it as well. Jani told us she particularly enjoyed using the diffuser attachment and members had an opportunity to try the tool for themselves. Next on our stage, Chase and Laura from STOLLA Luxury Salon Wear, designed for fashion industry professionals to elevate both the artists' work and experience. STOLLA displayed the beautifully designed capes, aprons and gowns they have designed to help stylists up our glam game. You really have to feel the fabric. As top-level artists, we deserve the best! Follow STOLLA for a chance to win a garment. Our guests were able to be seen more clearly both in the room and on Zoom thanks to TML! Not only did they provide lights to illuminate our meeting, The Makeup Light representative discussed how to use their professional line of LED light panels and kits, plus what kind of light we've been using and should be using. Light is the foundation of our art and creativity and seeing our subject in the best light possible supports our work, confidence, and our eyes. They also offer pro discounts! We then had the pleasure of learning an amazing bald cap wrap demonstrated by our own 706 member artists and multiple award winners Kimi Messina and Joe Matke. While showing us the technique of wrapping in one direction, Joe and Kimi talked about smoothing to avoid bumps around the hairline, as well as products to use, drying as you go, removing clips, and pros and cons of other ways to wrap. They also showed us how to use cotton batting to perfect the shape and smooth any flaws, and recommend practicing to hone your skills before using this game-changing method on your client. Kimi and Joe clearly enjoy their art and it was super fun watching them share their methods! B Y J A N I K L E I N B A R D & B R E N D A B L A T T Hair loss is the fastest-growing issue in the hair industry. Jared Reynolds, founder of Zenagen, was our lively and spectacular final speaker with so much information to share that we wished we'd had more than 30 minutes to take in all he had to educate us about. Jared first began researching hair loss in medical school due to his own personal experience with the problem. He spoke about COVID hair loss in particular, which as we are all seeing in our work, has become an important topic. The products are formulated differently for men and women based on the different reasons for loss and are inclusive to all hair types and textures. Jared's passion and expertise is an inspiration. Additionally, for those of us who are more and more concerned about exposure to harmful chemicals via hair products, this award-winning hair growth line is plant- based! There's so much more to learn on the website and Zenagen is offering a 25% discount for Local 706 (for 60 days from date of the seminar) with the code IATSE25. Much gratitude to our generous presenter/educators for helping keep Local 706 stylists informed and at the pinnacle of our craft! We are proud of the classes we've been able to put together with their help. Thanks to First Entertainment Credit Union for the nibbles and everyone who attended for showing up on a Sunday to share the gift of knowledge. Kudos to Local 706 President Julie Socash and Claire Alexandra Doyle for putting together our new and fabulous sound equipment!! Please share the love! @THEMAKEUPLIGHT, @STOLLA.US, @ZENAGENHAIR & @ZENAGENHAIRPRO, @SHARKBEAUTY
