10 • THE ARTISAN SUMMER 2023 Working as a wig stylist and make-up artist in the theater is a unique and exciting career. It is a profession that requires skill, creativity, and an eye for detail. As a wig stylist and make-up artist, you are responsible for following the created the looks for the performers. You work closely with the hair and make-up designer, costume designer, director, and performers to bring the vision of the show to life. You must be able to work well under pressure and meet tight deadlines. Working with wigs is a major aspect of this job. A wig stylist must be able to recreate the realistic hair styles that the designer has put in place with styling techniques, hair types, and sometimes wig construction. As a wig stylist, you will also be responsible for maintaining the wigs throughout the run of the production. Make-up is another critical element of this job. Make-up artists must be able to recreate the design from the designer to create a range of looks from natural to dramatic, depending on the character and production. They must also be knowledgeable about different types of make-up, including foundation, contouring, and special effects make- up. One of the most interesting experiences in this field is working with wigs and make-up at Disneyland. Disneyland is known for its incredible attention to detail, and this extends to the performer's costumes, wigs, and make-up. Disneyland employs a team of wig stylists and make-up artists to ensure that every performer looks their best. The park has strict guidelines for each character's appearance, and it is the job of the wig stylist and make-up artist to bring those guidelines to life. Working at Disneyland as a wig stylist and make-up artist offers the opportunity to work in a fun, fast-paced environment and to be a part of creating magical experiences for the guests. You must be able to work well under pressure as it's not without its challenges. The park has strict guidelines for each character's appearance, and you must be able to meet those guidelines. Another challenge is the long hours since Disneyland is open year- round, which means you must be available to work holidays, weekends, and evenings. Local 706 Theater Workouts SHOW NEWS are many other opportunities for wig stylists and make-up artists. We have numerous theaters, from small community theaters to large Broadway-style theaters. We also have many members that tour on what's called "Pink Contract" which is Broadway shows touring on the road nationwide and sometimes worldwide. Working in the world of live theater can be an exciting and rewarding job. Although it is a challenging profession, it is one that offers endless opportunities for creativity and growth. The sound of a live audience is such a wonderful high. To be able to feel and hear a response to something you are part of creating is amazing. Working in network TV as a hair stylist and make-up artist is a fast-paced and demanding job that requires a high level of skill and creativity as well. You are responsible for creating the looks of the on-air talent, including anchors, reporters, and sometimes guests. As a hair stylist, you must be able to create hair styles that are appropriate for the talent's personality. This may include creating hair styles that are appropriate for the talent's age and personality, while also meeting the requirements of the show. This could mean creating hair styles that are easy to maintain, look good on camera, and can be replicated quickly. Make-up artists must be able to create a range of looks, from natural to dramatic, depending on the needs of the show. They must also be knowledgeable about different types of make-up that will work on air. Working on network TV as a hair stylist and make-up artist is a challenging job as well as you must be able to do fast paced work and work with numerous talents in a short amount of time. It is also a great opportunity to work with talented professionals and be a part of creating engaging and exciting programming.
