I N T H E H E I G H T S | P E R S P E C T I V E 8 3 The opportunity to visually represent an entire section of Manhattan, overlooked cinematically for years in spite of a plethora of movies filmed in or set in New York, was both exhilarating and daunting. Add the challenge of creating a complex, heightened realism representation of a Tony Award-winning musical, set in the actual neighborhood of Pulitzer Prize-winning writer of the musical and screenplay, Quiara Hudes, and force of nature, multi-hyphenate Lin Manuel Miranda, and I was just a tiny bit anxious. How to get all the details just right...how to effectively represent the myriad of characters from the community's three distinct but interwoven cultures—Dominican, Puerto Rican & Cuban... and how to make all the environments work for the host of storytelling, choreographic and production needs? The importance of this community being seen through life's daily details, as well as expanding the world far beyond its stage incarnation, was incredibly important to director Jon M. Chu and the entire creative team. Having witnessed the impact of Crazy Rich Asians on audiences, we were striving to make real-world differences through every aspect of crafting In the Heights. A.
