Resources and Opportunities Year-long student contest focuses on chemistry for grades K-8 students You Be The Chemist, organized by the Chemical Education Foundation, is a chemistry bee that tests students' knowledge of con- cepts such as experimental design, atomic weights, and chemical reac- tions. The competition aims to inspire the next generation of sci- entists, engineers, and industry leaders; enhance science education through hands-on activities and chemistry competitions; and foster an appreciation among the general public for chemistry and the chemi- cal industry. All Delaware schools are invited to participate in Delaware's 2013 You Be The Chemistcompetition. For more details, teachers and administrators can contact Jason Galinski at JGalinski@dow.com. Check out more about the contest online at www.chemed.org/ybtc/. Much material is available to help educators, including the possibility of bringing a local chemist to your school to teach what the foundation calls "the essential elements." The study materials are already posted; qualifying exam will be posted Nov. 20; and the school regis- tration deadline is Dec. 14. Delaware's state winner will be invited to compete in a national chemistry bee early next summer, where the winner goes away with a $5,000 college scholarship. High school athletic programs compete for California Casualty Grants California Casualty is accepting applications for its Thomas R. Brown Athletics Grant program for public high schools. Applications will be accepted until January 15, 2013. Guidelines and application forms can be found at www.calcas athlet- icsgrant.com. Shrinking state budgets and man- dates to improve academic perform- ance have forced many schools to trim or even eliminate some of their athletics programs. Oftentimes, coaches and parents end up subsidizing sports out of their own pockets, and athletes risk injury by practicing or playing with worn, unsafe equipment - or face the disappointment of not playing at all. During the past two years, California Casualty awarded $100,000 in grants to 69 schools in 26 states. A list of those schools and recipient photographs follow. In the upcoming year, $75,000 will be allo- cated in grants of $1,000 to $3,000 to schools nationwide. Last year, two high school athletic departments in Delaware received $1,000 grants - Laurel and Seaford. Applicants must be current mem- bers (or referred by a member) of the National Education Association (NEA) as well as be an active employee of the public high school for which funding is sought. Complete details can be found at www.calcasathleticsgrant.com. Award notifications will be made by April 30, 2013. For more information about ath- letic grants, visit www.CalCas AthleticsGrant.com.
