40 Special Election Edition 2014 x AEA Advocate AROUND AEA Paradise Valley Education Association recruited about 70 members from the new teachers starting in the district. They had a very special speaker at their event, Dennis Van Roekel, the outgoing NEA President. Van Roekel is a past president of PVEA and worked as a math teacher in the district. Isaac District Education Association enrolled 51 new teachers attending their luncheon and Tempe Secondary Education Association and Higley Education Association each recruited about half of the new teachers attending their events. Tucson Education Association enrolled 56 of the new teachers at their orientation luncheon. They also gave out some great prizes for new members and collected information on potential members for follow up by TEA recruiters. Sunnyside Education Association signed up 39 new teachers. Jill Strandquist from California Casualty Auto and Home Insurance and a representative from eSWAG spoke with teachers about benefits of joining. Marana Education Association had over 20 recruiters at their event and each one sat and spoke with new teachers from their work site. They were able to recruit 26 new members that day and are already following up from information they gathered through welcome postcards. Flagstaff Education Association signed up 15 new teachers during their orientation luncheon. FEA member Lynne Gurne did all the cooking for the event – homemade Italian food! FEA had 11 membership recruiters and plans to have one-on-one follow up conversations on the value of belonging to the Association with remaining potential members. 2 Creighton EA New Teacher Events, cont. from page 39 Paradise Valley EA
