How can they ensure that the voices of public school employees are heard, and heeded, by elected officials? First and foremost, all AEA members need to be registered to vote, and then they must exercise that most important right. Those votes can then be multiplied when members reach out to those around them. Learn about recommended candidates' positions on education, women's issues, health care, retirement, etc. Many voters are uninformed about the candidates' positions on issues. Be ready to share information about recommended candidates and to refute the lies or half-truths that will be spread on TV and in ads with Dark Money. Opinions of school employees are valued by the general public. Use that influence to help others make good decisions and to vote for supporters of quality public education. Start with Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, adult children, aunts, uncles, and cousins. If they are not registered to vote, help them to register before the October 6th deadline. This issue of The Advocate contains a pull-out section of the AEA/NEA recommended candidates for the upcoming general election. Use that section as a tool when talking to family members, friends, neighbors, church associates, and others about the importance of voting in this election for the right candidates. Keep the momentum going by reminding them to vote either by early ballot, starting October 9th, or at the polls on November 4th. Offer assistance to those who might need help filling out a ballot at home, or getting to the polls on Election Day. Act as though the fate of public education depends on this election….because it does! AEA Retired President Linda Somo Your Voice is Your Vote Write us!
