Interestingly enough, Javier has plans for Kress Market to support the local art scene by displaying artwork in the building. The Kress chain of retail department stores, which operated from 1896 to 1981, was known for the exceptional architecture of its buildings, with each one envisioned as a work of public art that would contribute to the cityscape. "We have plans for a design. We have a wall for local artists to display their art," Javier explained. "I want to help promote local art and for local artists to be able to expose their art." Javier and Hilda also want the building to be a resource for the community and it will be available for anyone wanting to host wine receptions or fundraising events. Although an official grand opening reception had been planned for August 12, Javier and Hilda went ahead and opened doors to the public on July 29. After months of preparation, which included talking with local residents and business owners about what they would like to see in the market, and stocking shelves with all sorts of products, Kress Market drew in eager customers and their reaction was immediate. "The people were very supportive," Javier said. "They were waiting outside. There was a family with kids and they were excited to walk through the market. They loved it.
