SEPTEMBER 2010 FOOD & WINE HOME & GARDEN : HOME TOUR 38 4,000-square-foot, four-bedroom and seven- bathroom the couple calls home today. When the Maizes — and pugs Maximus, Romulus and Remus and cats Azure and Jackie — want to retreat from their public downstairs lifestyle, the couple ventures upstairs to more tranquil environments. Greeting the duo atop the winding staircase at the second floor is a newly constructed library. To one side of the hall is a guest bedroom with a view of the Pacific Ocean and a Zen room with light green walls, numerous pillows and a Swiss ball while down the other side of the hallway is a master bedroom overlooking the Peninsula with a balcony and his-and-her bathrooms. On the third floor is where a balcony with a Peninsula view, an office, exercise equipment, a balcony on the other side of the house with an ocean view and a hand-crafted bar allow the duo to unwind from their day jobs as wealth management advisors and certified financial planners for Maize Tuebner Maize at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. To say the Maizes live on the sand is no joke as the couple's proximity to the shore is less than a football throw away. The only thing separating the pair's residence from the beach itself is the paved sidewalk that runs along the Peninsula. This area receives plenty of daily foot traffic, particularly on summer weekends, but once again, this active lifestyle suits the Maizes just fine. "It doesn't bother me," Jan said. "I'm up earlier anyways and it's fun to see people out there. Lots of people dock their boats, the kayaks come around and everybody knows the dogs. We're fortunate to have this beach. Jerry and I feel incredibly lucky every single day we wake up here." n JAN MAIZE
