SEPTEMBER 2010 FOOD & WINE HOME & GARDEN : HOME TOUR 36 Near the top of Jerry and Jan Maize's to-do list when they demolished their Peninsula home in 2003 and rebuilt from scratch, was creating a wine cellar large enough to inspire the vino lovers to become collectors. The couple got half of what they wanted. "We thought we would start collecting because we really enjoy it," Jan said. "However, the collecting thing is not really working. We'll buy a case that we think we will lay down for five years, then we want to share it with everybody because it's so good. We're not aficionados. We enjoy it and like to enjoy it with our friends." The 57-degree cellar stores up to 800 bottles at a time. That number might be more than most people would ever need, but when considering the Maizes' penchant for entertaining, 800 might not be enough. The duo's three-story abode is often the location for fundraisers, work parties, client events and social gatherings. One glance at the pair's downstairs patio and it's easy to see why. When constructing their home, the Maizes installed Lanai Doors and used the same marble flooring inside the house and on the outdoor patio to blend the couple's open aired kitchen/living room/dining room with an outdoor area complete with a barbecue, plants and a semi-circular couch that surrounds a fire pit. Knowing their finished residence would be the site of many festive functions, the Maizes took every measure to ensure their residence would be strong enough to survive the local terrain. "This place is always rocking on the weekends," Jan said. "The reason we have all this marble flooring instead of carpet is because of the sand. Also, we have a lot of KITCHEN
