The challenge here was very much about making this empty room feel like a built-in and architectural space while retaining its scale and elegance. By building custom booths, bars, a reception desk, giant deco-inspired screens, a backing wall, a stage, and dressing in drapery, tables, chairs and a large custom stone table centerpiece, the scale and history of the elegant turn-of-the-century architecture which is woven into the rich history of San Francisco is evoked. A number of breakaway pieces accommodated the epic fight scene, which then moves into the full scale and macro world of a prep kitchen, with knives, fire, boiling water and an assortment of flying foods under hot lights and stainless steel surfaces. The restaurant was built on location and designed to connect to the kitchen set, built on stage in order to accommodate the many stunts and camera angles needed for principal photography, second unit and macro unit shoots. The myriad of design, budget, and location challenges, as always, ended up being opportunities to play with the juxtaposition of the many worlds seen in Ant-Man and the Wasp. From the beta/homemade/high-tech world of Pym and his constantly evolving laboratory, to the textured, gritty in between spaces of San Francisco and its macro world, to finding the lyrical beauty in the mundane, to the vibrant unexpected landscapes of the quantum realm, to the academic world of Foster's Berkeley, to the melancholy abandoned home base of Ghost. All these proved to be exciting and challenging design opportunities. I hope you enjoy the film!!! ADG D E
