One of the central themes of the film is of the characters hiding in plain sight. Hank and Hope are forced into hiding to avoid the authorities after Scott's actions in Civil War brought them under scrutiny. Scott resumes his role as Ant-Man, all while being under house arrest and closely monitored by the FBI. Ghost phases in and out of this world in order to literally hide in plain sight outside of this dimension. In the safety of her once-abandoned childhood home, she is helped by a former partner of Hank's, Doctor Foster, who hides his involvement in the shroud of academia, appearing to the world as simply a Berkeley professor. This theme manifests itself in the visuals of the film. PROLOGUE: 1987 QUANTUM GATE: It is revealed that Hank Pym's development of the quantum gateway started decades ago, when a makeshift version is seen in the prologue. It was important for the 1987 design to look like a recognizable analogue prototype of the quantum gate seen later in Hank's present-day lab. This early precursor to the quantum gate, made from Hank's plans by a competitor, was not intended to be built, and explodes in a tragic accident. The pre- and post-explosion looks of the gate were designed simultaneously to ensure both tied into each other visually and served all the needs of the production. SAN FRANCISCO: The film takes place in San Francisco and the city and its exciting geography serve as a character in the film. Not only were the huge level changes and A. 1987 QUANTUM GATE, BUILT ON LOCATION IN ATLANTA. SET PHOTO. B. GIANT MAN AND THE WASP IN SAN FRANCISCO, ILLUSTRATION IN PHOTOSHOP BY EVGENI TOMOV. C.
