46 { THE SOMM JOURNAL } DECEMBER/JANUARY 2017/2018 { wine region profile } A CARIÑENA REFRESHER IN PREPARATION FOR THE GLOBAL GARNACHA SUMMIT story and photos by Lyn Farmer A mesa in Spain's Cariñena region. Old-vine Garnacha at Bodegas Paniza. Diverging rows of Garnacha in Cariñena. The soil profile of Cariñena is dominated by red-orange Miocene clay soils, brown lime- stone, slate, and gravel. THE GLORY OF Garnacha As the popularity of Garnacha increases dramatically in many parts of the world, the announcement of the inaugural Global Garnacha Summit could not have arrived at a better time. Planned for April 24, 2018 at The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) at Copia in Napa, the event will serve as an in-depth exploration of this classic grape variety and how it's made in signature regions, including Priorat, the Southern Rhône, Australia, California, and Cariñena. If Garnacha (or Grenache in other parts of the world) seems like an outlier in this group of stars in the wine galaxy, it shouldn't. Cariñena, a DOP in Spain's Aragon province, is generally recognized as the home of Garnacha and will serve as the driving force behind the summit. This is a stel - lar opportunity for the emerging region to show just how much mastery it possesses when it comes to producing Garnacha-based wines.
