18 { THE SOMM JOURNAL } DECEMBER/JANUARY 2017/2018 { mastery } IN THE WAKE OF devastating hurricanes and fires, the Court of Master Sommeliers found it was also not immune to Mother Nature this year. The Master Sommelier exam rescheduled to St. Louis, Missouri, on October 16-18 at the Four Seasons Downtown; with sweeping views of the iconic Gateway Arch, it provided a fitting back - drop for attaining dreams. Some of the best wine professionals in the nation descended upon the city in the ongoing pursuit of the esteemed Master Sommelier title. The service and tasting portions were on the docket, and eight persons finally picked up both parts to finally reach the goal of passing an exam averaging an 8 percent pass rate. As of the exam in St. Louis, as well as exams in London where an additional five aficionados earned their elite status this year, there are now 249 Master Sommeliers in the world, with 158 in the Americas Chapter of the Court of Master Sommeliers. Rebecca Fineman also marked a milestone as she became the 25th female Master Sommelier. Congratulations to the newly-minted Master Sommeliers!
