78  /  the tasting panel  /  april 2017 WINES IMAGE Cardinal Rule 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Dry Creek Valley ($45) Aromas of sweet sunshine-laden soil merge with chocolate and some of the most outstand- ing floral tones. And this alluring quality continues gracefully on the palate. The finish—offering a slight minerality—proves that those lush, round tannins keep on a circular, sensual path from beginning to end. 93 San Antonio Winery 2014 100th Anniversary Centennial Blend, Paso Robles ($85) Dark cherry and blackberry blur the lines between perfume and flavor for this sen- sational blend of 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Malbec, 21% Petit Verdot, 11% Petite Sirah and 4% Syrah. Dry, grainy tannins set off the dusty tones of violets and black fruit skin. Graceful and regal, this is a tribute to wine royalty that marks a century for the Riboli family's San Antonio Winery. 95 Folie à Deux 2015 Pinot Gris, Sonoma Coast ($18) A perceptible soft vanilla coincides with pineapple freshness on the nose. With a searing minerality at its very core, a creaminess finds its way to the top, expres- sive and elegant with a heady peach nectar. This is quite like an Alsatian Pinot Gris, aromas and texture exuding grace and clarity. 93 TRINCHERO FAMILY ESTATES J. McClelland 2013 Petit Verdot, Napa Valley ($40) Earthy blue flowers and choco- late blackberry are charming to nose but on the palate those violets come into full bloom amid dark roast coffee bean, tobacco leaf and round, vibrant tannins. The well-deep red finishes with licorice, black fruit and nicely spiced bittersweet dark choco- late. 94 Cadaretta 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley, Washington ($50) Opulent and plush with notes of spiced plum and graphite. Mocha jam and blueberry- cinnamon French toast weave into complex, finely grained tannins. 93 In each issue, The Tasting Panel's Publisher and Editorial Director Meridith May selects her favorite wines and spirits of the month. Wildly infatuated. Seriously smitten. Head over heels in love. PHOTO: DAVID GADD PICKS
