Summer 2016 The Costume Designer 41 Mindy Kaling, CD Salvador Perez, makeup artist Cindy Williams, and hairstylist Laura LaRocca CD Salvador Perez and actress Mindy Kaling hosted a style event at The Grove that included a display of costumes from The Mindy Project and a runway show curated by Perez and inspired by the look of The Mindy Project. After the fashion show, Kaling and Perez held a Q&A that included Mindy's hair and makeup team about their collaboration on the look of the series. CD Patia Prouty just completed the Warner Bros. Television Di- rectors' Workshop with an episode to direct for them next year. Exploring the possibility of directing was suggested to her by a showrunner who thought she would make a good director based on the way she works. Patia comes from a place of story, character, and intent when she designs, and then translates that to a costume. She feels directing, as designing, is much harder than it looks and the great ones make it look easy. CD Mikael Sharafyan CD Mikael Sharafyan has recently been invited to give lectures and workshops to students in Baltimore, New York, Washington, D.C., Yerevan, Armenia, and FIDM in Los Angeles about career develop- ment and the art of Costume Design. He was particularly impressed by students at the Baltimore School of the Arts, who exuded so much passion and curiosity for their studies amidst the great adversities they faced in their everyday experiences. Sharafyan firmly believes that engaging with young people and sharing knowledge with new gen- erations is the most rewarding and beneficial use of one's creative and professional energy. BFN - EXHIBITIONS On July 2, O&M Leather celebrated the opening of CD Donna Casey Aira's Watercolor Costume Illustration exhibit in Eagle Rock. Many toasted her, including CDG members Luke Reichle, Dorothy Amos, Bonnie Nipar, Valerie Laven-Cooper, Alix Hester, and Anna Wyckoff. Casey Aria will next be exhibiting her exquisite translucent images at Barnsdall Art Center Gallery in Hollywood. A spectacular 5,000-seat outdoor theater is being built for CD Fran- cine Lecoultre's show Aerospace in Sichuan, China. Cutting-edge technology was used for 200 sci-fi costumes worn by 60 interna- tional performers for a fantastical story underscored with light, water effects, fire, and wet fog. The black-and-white colorblock tuxedo is displayed within the "Dandy" section; however, LACMA identifies it as a key example of both Italian Fu- turism and the transition into the mid-century Continental silhouette.
