18 The Costume Designer Summer 2015 EMMY AWARD NOMINEES Outstanding Costumes for a Period | Fantasy Series, Limited Series or Movie Outlander, Starz; Roots, History; Game of Thrones, HBO; Downton Abbey, Masterpiece; The People v. O.J. Simpson, FX Networks. Outlander "Not in Scotland Anymore" Terry Dresbach Costume Supervisor: Anna Lau Assistant Designers: Nadine Powell and Elle Wilson It starts with making sure I do right by the books, which I have been a fan of for 20 years. But above all else, it matters that my work resonates with the Scottish people. This is their history we are telling. Scotland is an incredibly beautiful country. I have lived here for four years now, and not a day goes by that I am not stunned by its beauty. I have tried to re- create the landscape in our costumes. My amazing, talented, dedicated team inspires me. I am no longer sure what they cannot do. Weaving, em- broidering, painted textiles, cobblers, milliners, metal smiths, and most of them have never done those things before. Every new challenge gets met and we make magic every day. It just blows me away and gets me through some very tough days. Ron Moore, my husband, and our showrunner, dragged me back in, kicking and screaming, insisting that this was going to be a wonderful, creative op- portunity for me. Roots "Night One" Ruth E. Carter and Diana Cilliers Costume Supervisors: Gillian Gregg and Meagan Luster Assistant Designers: Hetta Burger and Meagan Coates Illustrators: Debbie Minne and Gabriel Metcalf Carter: My greatest inspiration is when I am given "the sub- ject" and begin creating "true to life" characters. I create a world of ideas beforehand and as we work with them, I walk around the room like a predator. I examine the look from all angles and vantage points both in physical form and mental pictures, like a dance. When the psychology of the character, the sociology of the times, and the details meet the actor, it's like love at fi rst sight. Cilliers: The huge variety of research, subject matter, pe- riods and history, of the different projects always keeps me inspired and excited. I am passionate about drawing inspira- tion from catwalk fashion and the art world, recycling ideas, and incorporating this into my work. I try to create period or futuristic costumes in a way that contemporary viewers can relate to. At the same time, I try to make the world feel natural, gritty, and alive.
