6 The Costume Designer Summer 2016 CONTRIBUTORS CHRISTINE COVER FERRO (Vet Your Vendors!, Emmy Nominees) I said yes to a lot of people this year and found myself in a one-woman theater festival this summer: five shows, 40 charac- ters, 60-ish costumes, and seven time periods between Memorial and Labor Day weekends. The soundtrack has been the hum and sometimes unsettling clanks, of my Singer, Abby, and my iPod's current predilection for Jacques Dutronc. My indulgence will, eventually, be sleep. VALLI HERMAN (Best Apps for Costume Design) It's another world in Santa Barbara, where the El Encanto allowed me the pleasures of a leisurely breakfast, a long bath, and writing letters—by hand! Summer is extra mellow with Kodály, Ligeti, and Tony Bennett on my playlists MARCY FROEHLICH (History of Dress, Text) I made a pilgrimage to a musi- cal theater and collapsed into piles of beautiful medieval fab- ric for The Hunchback of Notre Dame, as the church bells tolled in the distance. GINA FLANAGAN (Vet Your Vendors!, Illustrator) I swam through the crowds of Comic-Con San Diego and basked on the beach in Hawaii sipping piña coladas, all the while listen- ing to my daughters' Top Pop 50 playlist, whether I liked it or not. ROBIN RICHESSON (History of Dress, Illustrator) I visited Texas for the first time, ya'll! Austin, to be exact. Went to the Illustration Conference, drank everything: bourbon, beer, absinthe, tequila! Listened to local band the "Love Leighs," swam in Barton Springs, ate barbeque, breakfast tacos, and bought my first pair of cowboy boots! (I didn't get to see the bats. Darn! Next time …) BONNIE NIPAR (Boldface Names, Emmy Nominees) After visiting the "Cindy Sherman: Imitation of Life" exhibit at The Broad, I was enthralled that at 23 years old, Sherman decided to make her art of conceptual self-portrai- tures solely on her own. She acted as subject, photographer, director, costume designer, makeup artist, hairstylist, and set designer. I was especially taken by her fascination with Hollywood's female stereo- types, meticulously emulating actresses from '50s-'60s films, as to be easily recognizable. JENNIFER SOULAGES (Emmy Nominees) I basked under the redwood trees of Santa Cruz, oogled the frothy fashions of Oscar de la Renta, and indulged in Veuve Clicquot. Prince blasted through the speakers … STACY ELLEN RICH (Boldface Names) Fireworks on the beach in Gulf Shores, culinary delights, and wild nights in New Orleans, garage rock-n-roll with John Waters in Oakland! Guilty as charged for too much summer fun! AASHA RAMDEEN (Consider the Surface) This summer was spent with fam- ily indulging in the warm nights and cool cocktails of beautiful Tobago, the sister island to my native country Trinidad. I simply couldn't get enough of the piña coladas there ... and having seen Paul Simon in concert just a few weeks prior, many of his Afro/ Caribbean songs perfectly com- plemented the atmosphere. KEITH CHRISTENSEN (Cover illustration) Thus far, my summer has con- sisted of the sights and sounds to be found between my home studio, Western, and Hargate. The flora and fauna of North and West Hollywood, thriving in their native habitat, have provided end- less inspiration and insight. The soundtrack was Neil Diamond's "America." Cover Illustration: For 20 years, Keith Christensen has worked in film and television as a concept artist and sculptor. Born and raised in the Chicago suburbs, his love for movies inevitably resulted in relo- cation to Los Angeles. After joining the CDG in 2009, a large percent- age of his time has been spent navigating the unpredictable world of the costume department. "I feel very fortunate to get to do what I do, and to work with so many great people on such challenging and fulfilling projects. Special thanks to my lovely wife and daughter for helping me through the other ones." artofkc.com CDG Elections are upcoming. Don't forget to cast your vote by September 7, 2016.
