4 The Costume Designer Summer 2016
EDITOR'S NOTE
Each summer, a CDG member is commissioned to create a
special cover for our magazine. I love the eye-opening oppor-
tunity this collaboration presents, particularly because my pas-
sion for visuals is informed by more than a decade of costume
illustrating, and my current work as an oil painter. This season,
Keith Christensen, who is not only an illustrator but also a
sculptor, graces our cover with his talents.
Keith tackled a formidable theme. He conceived of the
Costume Designer surrounded by the newest technologies,
which he views as a "double-edged sword." While they open
up a host of possibilities, they also obligate one to gain a working knowledge of new
materials and methods. Stylistically, Keith was inspired by deco icon J.C. Leyendecker.
He created an image with a nod to Leyendecker's sense of drama, architectural organi-
zation of the picture plane, and striking line quality. Personally, I find this increasingly
painterly approach to costume illustration intriguing. And always, there is something
an image can evoke in a moment of looking, which words can only circle. Thank you
Keith for the magical result.
And yet, despite the possibilities created by the latest technology, the art of
Costume Design remains essentially the same. Mayes C. Rubeo told me recently when
discussing the CGI costumes in Warcraft, "Cutting-edge technology doesn't change the
work for Costume Designers, we still are traditional filmmakers. I have to source fabric
and trims. I still work with every character individually and I enjoy doing that." In this
brave new world of Costume Design, the trick seems to be mitigating the mechanics of
production while making space for the art.
In this issue, illustrator Aasha Ramdeen shows us the latest techniques in textile
design for film and television, while associate editor Christine Cover Ferro urges us
to consider where we spend our dollars in "Vet Your Vendors!" Also, associate editor
Bonnie Nipar teams up with contributor Stacy Ellen Rich to create bolder "Boldface
Names," a revamped column where we feature more of your stories from the frontlines
of production.
On another front, our Guild is working hard to promote members across our
social media platforms. Please follow us on Facebook (Costume Designers Guild 892),
Instagram (@cdglocal892), Twitter (@cdglocal892), and email your handles to our
office so we can follow you back. Another way to interface with your peers is to visit
our website (costumedesignersguild.com) and check out our Pick of the Week feature,
where we learn the back story on the latest shows from their Costume Designers. And if
you haven't yet had the chance, I encourage you to subscribe to our YouTube channel
(youtube.com/thecostumedesignersguild) and peruse the wealth of information there.
Last, but certainly not least, in our special Awards Section, we distinguish our
Emmy nominees, congratulate them for their outstanding work, and ask, "What is the
source of your continued inspiration?" Learning about their process is as encouraging
as it is enlightening, and I was touched that so many felt that their crew is one of the
biggest reasons they love their job. In a world that seems to become more divisive daily,
it is these unifiers, which underscore our strength as a guild.
